Covetella Shoot @ Fairmont Hotel, Singapore
I recently had a vintage-high fashion themed photoshoot done at Fairmont Hotel Singapore with Jasbir John, who does most of my visual content creation these days. The day started off with a screening of one of Jasbir’s art films in the gorgeous and spacious Fairmont Premier Room which was also where the photoshoot was done.
OUTFIT OF CHOICE
The outfit of choice was an elegant black winged dress from Covetella which mirrored the butterfly tattoo I recently got on my left arm. Covetella is a premier dress rental boutique that prides itself on having one of the largest designer dress selections in Singapore - from flirty daytime maxi cocktail dresses to ultra-glamorous evening gowns from Petite to Plus sized. The rental option makes high fashion accessible to women without the burden of hunting around to find such dresses. This is awesome, given most women will not have the need to be sashaying in a shiny gown every night of the week anyway. This also eliminates the trouble of long term maintenance of a delicate piece and makes life much more hassle free - for me, at least.
THE LUXURY OF FAIRMONT HOTEL
Architecturally, Fairmont Hotel Singapore is a sight to behold. Housed at the heart of the lion city and at the crossroads of the Central Business District, it is a luxurious 5 Star hotel built to pamper - housing over 769 lavish guest rooms and suites, gastronomical pleasures as well as one of Asia’s largest Spas - Willow Stream Spa.
LUXURY WITHOUT GRACE?
Having said that, the evening started out pretty interestingly - with me scurrying out to get an adapter for the film screening. I volunteered to save the day. Yes, I can be spontaneously kind at times.
Despite the fact that we had booked the venue some months ahead and had briefed the hotel’s staff that there was going to be a screening with guests arriving – they were surprisingly unable to get the adapter required for the film screening ready on the day of the event. This was only made known to us barely a few minutes before the guests arrived.
Nonetheless, the rest of the evening proceeded fairly smoothly. Being dolled up by Ivy Imogen – who was among the Top 6 Finalists of Shu Uemura's Beauty Art Competition 2016 was special. I also much appreciated how the decor of the room, style of the dress and overall blend of colours were artfully captured by Jasbir. The photographs reflected a strong retro mood that was at once edgy and sophisticated. I have always felt uncannily connected to the Retro Era from young. Days when I used to plant myself in front of the television screen and watch replays of Bewitched and I Love Lucy whilst stuffing myself with coco pops. During the shoot, I allowed myself to silently slip into fantasizing of what it must have been to be in the shoes of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and other iconic women of the Retro Era. There was so much to admire about their bold style, flair and confidence. These were my predominant sentiments as the camera clicked away.
It was great that the hotel is pretty conveniently located a few minutes away from City Hall MRT with restaurants and bars a stones throw away. One of my favourite among these is Anti:dote – a modern, romantically-lit and stylish cocktail bar where drinks are crafted with premium spirits and housemade bitters, liqueurs and sodas are paired perfectly with innovative modern tapas. Specialties include Boston Lobster Roll, Candied Ginger Scones, Corpse Reviver, High Tea, Iberico Ham Quiche, Le Liason, Strawberry Gateau and The Blood of Dillinger.
You cannot go wrong unwinding with a high-tea set that looks like that - especially for someone with a sweet tooth like myself.
